Top Names for 2013 - the Results Are In!
The Social Security Administration released its top 10 names for 2013 today. I was wrong about Sophia, sort of. She is still #1 but is less popular (only 1.1039% of girls were named Sophia, down from 1.1523% the year before). I had predicted on another website that Emma would be # 1 - well, I was wrong, but not entirely. Emma did rise in popularity, just not enough to completely overtake Sophia yet - 1.0888% of girls were named Emma in 2013 compared to 1.0812% in 2012).
In real terms that means there were 1,170 fewer Sophias born and 89 additional Emmas came along in 2013 (versus 2012).
I was sort of right about Jacob. He did drop from #1. Only I had thought he would go to the 2nd spot and he fell to #3 (which makes him a 'history maker' in terms of #1 names here in the U.S. Jacob is the only #1 boy name to drop more than one spot when unseated from the #1 rank.) But I was so wrong about what name would be #1. On another website I predicted Mason would take the #1 spot, but that was taken instead by Noah. I did not see a resurgence of Noah at all, and so I was pleasantly surprised (Noah is a fantastic name).
I know some of you hate it when your favorite names become super popular but I don't feel quite like that. I love seeing good names being used more, and good spellings.

Top Baby Names of 2013 - Predictions
I thought I'd give you some data to help you make the most educated guess of the top baby names for 2013 here in the U.S. The Social Security Administration releases its list right around Mother's Day, so let's get our guesses on record before they publish their results!
Currently Jacob and Sophia are the #1 names given to babies in the United States. Less than 1% of boys named in 2012 were given the name Jacob. A little more than 1% of girls born in 2012 were named Sophia.
Looking at the graphs below you can see how Jacob and Sophia have fared in the past.

Here is the trend in #1 names nationally the last 134 years:
Boys:
1880-1923 John
1924-1939 Robert
1940-1952 James
1953 Robert
1954-1959 Michael
1960 David
1961-1998 Michael
1999-2012 Jacob
Girls:
1880-1946 Mary
1947-1952 Linda
1953-1961 Mary
1962-1969 Lisa
1970-1984 Jennifer
1985-1990 Jessica
1991-1992 Ashley
1993-1995 Jessica
1996-2007 Emily
2008 Emma
2009-2010 Isabella
2011-2012 Sophia
Where do names go after being on the top of the heap? Boy names, without exception, drop to #2 the first year they are unseated from #1 status. Girl names generally do the same (only 2 #1 names have gone to #3 rather than #2 the first year they lost their crown).
I am guessing Jacob will drop to #2 and so will Sophia.

Welcome to Ace of Names!
I started a regular feature on my blog about the most obscure names I've come across, and those with name stories too good to pass up. I thought it would be a good idea to just have a blog about names so that if you are not interested in the other topics on my blog, you don't have to bother with them.
Whether you consider me an ace of names or not is entirely relative, as there are plenty of people who know more about them than I do. However, this has been a lifelong hobby of mine, and my life is long enough now for that to mean something, and I have also had a deep interest in many subjects which are name-related, such as languages, literature, history, geography, politics, art.
For now you will mainly find obscure names or variants or names you are unlikely to know depending on your cultural background - my folks, for instance, are less likely to be familiar with names like Nevaeh and Makayla or Araceli and Mariska and my nephew may know more about Danaerys and Tyrion but still not know Evangeline and Cordelia. As much as possible I try to favor the most obscure names, generally a name I have only just encountered for the first time.
Please contribute any names you think would be of interest! You are welcome to ask about a name you would like to know more about, if I have not yet posted information on that name, and even if I don't know the name, I will do what I can to find out more about it.
I also really enjoy discussing names, so feel free to share your list of favorite names, first and middle name combinations, names you dislike or the latest names in the news, etc.
